3-Day Puerto Rico Family Itinerary

With just three days in Puerto Rico, you can experience a little bit of everything; historic streets, tropical beaches, lush rainforest, and incredible local food. This itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your time without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Old San Juan & Beach Fun

Walk through 500 years of history, colorful streets, and iconic landmarks—all within a compact, walkable city.

Morning: Walk Through History
Start your trip immersed in Puerto Rico's past, exploring forts and panoramic ocean views.
  • Explore Old San Juan's colorful streets.
  • Visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, where kids can imagine defending the city from pirates and invading ships.
  • Walk along the historic city walls.
Lunch: Explore & Eat
Enjoy local favorites in Old San Juan. Many restaurants offer kid-friendly menus.
Afternoon: Slow Down
Spend the afternoon at Escambrón Beach, one of San Juan's most family-friendly beaches with calm waters and nearby facilities.
Evening: Sunset Walk
Finish the day with ice cream and a stroll along Paseo de la Princesa.


Day 2: El Yunque & Luquillo

Relax on some of the island's most accessible beaches and experience the vibrant, modern side of San Juan.

Morning: El Yunque
Drive to El Yunque National Forest.

  • Wildlife spotting
Midday: Lunch + Recharge
Visit the famous Luquillo Kiosks where everyone can choose their favorite foods—from empanadillas to burgers and fresh fruit smoothies.

Afternoon Options
Relax at Luquillo Beach, known for its gentle waves and palm-lined shoreline.
Evening
Return to San Juan.


Day 3: Museo del Niño & Sweet Treats

Wrap up your family vacation with a day of hands-on discovery, delicious local treats, and one last chance to enjoy Puerto Rico's sunshine. Kids can climb aboard a real airplane, explore interactive exhibits, and burn off energy before ending the trip with a scoop of Puerto Rico's famous ice cream or a final stroll along the beach. It's the perfect balance of learning, fun, and relaxation before heading home.

Morning
Spend several hours at Museo del Niño in Carolina. Children can enjoy:
  • Interactive science and technology exhibits
  • Mini zoo with farm animals
  • A real commercial airplane they can explore
  • Hands-on activities designed for all ages

Best for: Children ages 3–12

Plan to spend: 2–4 hours

Midday: Lunch in Carolina
After working up an appetite, enjoy lunch at one of Carolina's family-friendly restaurants.
  • Puerto Rican comfort food
  • Pizza or burgers for picky eaters
  • Fresh fruit smoothies
  • Local pastries or desserts
If your family prefers, pack a picnic and enjoy one of the nearby parks.
Afternoon: One Last Adventure
Choose the activity that best fits your family's schedule before heading home.

Drive to Heladería de Lares (if heading west) or visit a favorite local ice cream shop. Puerto Rico is famous for creative flavors such as: Cheese, Corn, Coconut, Passion fruit, Guava and Coffee.
Evening
If you have a late flight, enjoy one final Puerto Rican dinner before saying ¡Hasta luego! to the Island of Enchantment.
