Insider Tip

Shopping in Puerto Rico is more than visiting malls. Some of my favorite finds have come from roadside kiosks, artisan markets, local bakeries, and small family-owned shops tucked away in town plazas. If you're looking for something uniquely Puerto Rican, skip the chain stores for an afternoon and explore a local downtown.

Why I Love Shopping in Puerto Rico

Having grown up in Puerto Rico, I've learned that some of the island's best shopping experiences aren't found inside a mall. They're tucked away in small artisan workshops, roadside fruit stands, neighborhood panaderías, and local festivals where artists proudly sell their work. Every time I return, I find something new—a handcrafted souvenir, a local coffee I've never tried, or a painting inspired by the island's landscapes. Shopping here isn't just about buying things; it's about discovering Puerto Rico's creativity, traditions, and the people behind them. That's why I always encourage visitors to mix the big shopping centers with local markets—you'll leave with far more meaningful memories than souvenirs alone.

A species can be native without being endemic. Native species occur naturally in a region but may also be found elsewhere. Endemic species, however, exist naturally only in one specific place. Of Puerto Rico's 17 native coquí species, 13 are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth.
