Why I Love Puerto Rico's Parks

Growing up in Puerto Rico taught me that parks are much more than green spaces. They're places where families gather on weekends, children play until sunset, friends share picnics beneath towering trees, and hikers discover waterfalls hidden in the mountains. What I love most is how every park offers something different—from tropical rainforests and coastal reserves to historic plazas and urban gardens. Exploring them is one of the best ways to experience the island beyond its beaches.

East Region

  1. Las Cabezas de San Juan State Park
    Las Cabezas de San Juan State Park located in Fajardo. Embraces a portion of the island's lush tropical rain forests. It also has a scientific research center, which serve as a home of many endangered species. Visitors can explore the reserve along a network of trails and board-walks. The Island's second oldest lighthouse, El Faro, is located here. Offers a magnificent view that, on a clear day, reaches distant Caribbean islands. The Nature Reserve is open for general and school group tours on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning and open to the public Wednesday through Sunday. Special rates are available for groups of 20 or more. Reservations are required for all visitors. Tours lasting two and one half hours, are scheduled four times daily: 9:30am, 10am, 10:30am and 2pm. An english tour is available at 2pm.

Central Region

  1. Bosque Estatal Guilarte
    Monte Guilarte Forest Reserve is a beautiful and lush tropical site. The Forest is divided into seven segments which are located among the municipalities of Adjuntas, Guayanilla, Penuelas and Yauco. The trails are excellent for hiking and the views at the pinnacle are breathtaking. On a clear day you can see both Ponce and San Juan without the aid of binoculars. Monte Guilarte (3,953 ft) is the third highest mountain peak on the island.

    The Christopher Columbus Park is located in a small forest at the southernmost beach of Aguadilla. The park harbors a romantic boardwalk along the beach.

Local Tips

Arrive Early

Puerto Rico's parks are most enjoyable in the morning when temperatures are cooler, wildlife is more active, and popular trails are less crowded. Early visits also offer the best lighting for photography.

Dress for the Outdoors

Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes, lightweight clothing, and bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent—especially if you're visiting forests, wetlands, or nature reserves.

Bring Plenty of Water

Puerto Rico's tropical climate can be warm and humid year-round. Carry enough water for your visit, particularly when exploring hiking trails or parks with limited facilities.

Respect Nature

Help preserve Puerto Rico's natural beauty by staying on designated trails, disposing of trash properly, and avoiding feeding wildlife. Many parks protect fragile ecosystems and endangered species.

Check Conditions Before You Go

Heavy rains can temporarily close trails, caves, or recreational areas. If you're planning to hike or visit a nature reserve, check current conditions before your trip.

Pack a Picnic

Many parks offer picnic tables, shaded pavilions, and scenic overlooks, making them wonderful places to enjoy lunch surrounded by nature. Just remember to leave the area as clean as you found it.

Don't Skip the Lesser-Known Parks

While El Yunque is world-famous, some of my favorite outdoor experiences have been in places like Bosque Estatal de Guánica, Toro Negro, and Cabezas de San Juan. They tend to be quieter, equally beautiful, and offer a different perspective of Puerto Rico's incredible natural diversity.
