A Brief History of Golf in Puerto Rico

Golf arrived in Puerto Rico during the early 20th century as American influence on the island grew following 1898. The island's first formal golf club, Berwind Country Club in Río Piedras, opened in 1930, initially featuring sand greens before becoming the first course in Puerto Rico to convert to grass greens in 1949. During the 1950s and 1960s, internationally renowned architects such as Robert Trent Jones Sr. helped transform Puerto Rico into one of the Caribbean's premier golf destinations by designing championship resort courses that attracted visitors from around the world.

Today, Puerto Rico is home to nearly 20 golf courses, several designed by legends including Robert Trent Jones Sr., Tom Kite, Greg Norman, Arthur Hills, Rees Jones, Gary Player, and Chi Chi Rodríguez himself. Thanks to its tropical climate, golfers can play year-round while enjoying ocean views, rainforest scenery, and mountain landscapes unlike almost anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Many visitors are surprised to learn that Puerto Rico's golf isn't just about luxury resorts. Some of my favorite courses are tucked between mountains, rainforests, and coastal cliffs. Puerto Rico Open

Since 2008, Puerto Rico has hosted the Puerto Rico Open, the island's only official PGA TOUR event. Held annually in Río Grande, the tournament has become a launching pad for future stars, with champions including Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, and Rafael Campos earning milestone victories here. The event also showcases Puerto Rico's hospitality, scenery, and world-class golf courses to a global television audience each year.

Puerto Rico's Greatest Golfers

Juan "Chi Chi" Rodríguez
1935–2024

Without question, the greatest golfer in Puerto Rican history.

Born in Río Piedras, Chi Chi Rodríguez overcame poverty by working as a caddie before turning professional. Known for his infectious personality and famous "sword dance" celebration after sinking birdie putts, he won:

• 8 PGA Tour victories
• 22 PGA Tour Champions victories
• World Golf Hall of Fame (1992)
• One of golf's greatest ambassadors

Beyond golf, he founded the Chi Chi Rodríguez Youth Foundation, helping thousands of disadvantaged children through education and golf. He remains one of Puerto Rico's most beloved sports figures.

Rafael Campos

Born in San Juan, Rafael Campos became the island's modern golfing hero.

A longtime Korn Ferry Tour player, Campos earned his PGA TOUR card through perseverance and finally captured his first PGA TOUR victory in 2024, inspiring a new generation of Puerto Rican golfers. He is also a fan favorite at the annual Puerto Rico Open, where local crowds enthusiastically support their hometown star.

Wilfredo Morales

One of Puerto Rico's top amateur golfers during the 1990s, Morales represented Puerto Rico internationally and helped the national team achieve one of its best performances in the Eisenhower Trophy before playing professionally. He remains an important figure in Puerto Rican golf development.
