Salvador Brau

Born January 11, 1842 in Cabo Rojo. Died November 5, 1912 in San Juan. Historian, journalist, sociologist, novelist, and writer whose works helped preserve Puerto Rico's history and cultural heritage. He wrote an earlier history of the island, "Historia de Puerto Rico" (1904). He was named the Official Historian for Puerto Rico from 1903 until his dead. His books are considered an important contribution to the study of Puerto Rican history, including "Puerto Rico and its History" (1894), "The Colonization of Puerto Rico," and "The Foundation of Ponce."
